PROJECT BASINS

ANTALYA BASIN


Antalya basin is located in the Mediterranean geographical region of Türkiye and is located between the Doğu (Eastern) Akdeniz and Batı (Western) Akdeniz basins. The basin is surrounded by the Taurus, Bey Mountains and Katrancık Mountains in the north and Antalya Bay in the south.


Major settlements, Antalya, Isparta and Burdur provinces are located in Antalya Basin. It should be added that the provinces of Afyonkarahisar and Konya also are partly involved in the basin. However, their rates are negligible.


The population of Antalya basin is around 2.5 million. This number corresponds to approximately 3% of the total population of Türkiye. Antalya has the highest population, with 59%, among the provinces in the basin as shown on the pie chart, followed by Burdur and Isparta.

BATI KARADENİZ BASIN

The basin area is approximately 30 000 km2. The catchment area of the Basin corresponds to approximately 3.7% of Türkiye’s total area Within the basin, 6 provincial centers namely Düzce, Bolu, Bartın, Zonguldak, Karabük, Sinop are located. There are 92 settlements as municipalities towns and villages with a population of over 2000.


Provincial centers of Kastamonu and Çankırı provinces are not located in the Batı Karadeniz basin; but some districts of these provinces are included in the basin boundaries. The major settlements as cities and some districts which are located in the basin are depicted as on the side.

DOĞU AKDENİZ BASIN

Doğu Akdeniz basin is located in the Mediterranean geographical region of Türkiye. The basin is neighboring to Antalya basin in west, Konya Closed basin in north and Seyhan basin in east.


Provincial borders of Antalya, Mersin, Karaman and Konya are intersected with the Doğu Akdeniz basin. Approximately 92% of Mersin, which includes the central districts, 7% of Antalya, 35% of Karaman, approximately 6% of Konya is located in the Doğu Akdeniz basin.


The population of Doğu Akdeniz basin is around 2.0 million. This number corresponds to approximately 2.5% of the total population of Türkiye. Mersin has the highest population, with 69%, among the provinces in the basin.

DOĞU KARADENİZ BASIN

Doğu Karadeniz basin is located in the Black Sea geographical region of Türkiye. The basin is neighboring to Çoruh basin in east, Yeşilirmak basin in the west and south. The Doğu Karadeniz basin covers an area extending from the Terme Stream in west, to the small Streams near Hopa in east. The basin is bounded with Kaçkar Mountains, Tatos Mountains, Rize Mountains, Soğanlı Mountains, Gümüşhane Mountains and Canik Mountains from east to west.


Provincial borders of Artvin, Bayburt, Erzurum, Giresun, Gümüşhane, Ordu, Rize, Samsun, Sivas, Tokat ve Trabzon are intersected with the Doğu Karadeniz basin.


Provincial boundaries of Artvin, Bayburt, Erzurum, Giresun, Gümüşhane, Ordu, Rize, Samsun, Sivas, Tokat and Trabzon are intersected with the borders of the Eastern Black Sea Basin. Of these provinces, 100% of Trabzon province, 99% of Rize province, 90% of Ordu province, 62% of Giresun province, 55% of Gümüşhane province and 7% of the Artvin province are within the basin boundaries.

KIZILIRMAK BASIN

Kızılırmak is the longest river flowing entirely within Türkiye. Rising in Eastern Anatolia, the river flows for a total of 1151 kilometers. The basin has an area of 82182 km2. After joining the Gökırmak, the River is flowing into the Black Sea.


Kızılırmak basin covers very large area. There are 14 provinces within the Kızılırmak Basin, namely Samsun, Çorum, Sinop, Kastamonu, Çankırı, Kırıkkale, Kırşehir, Nevşehir, Kayseri, Sivas, Ankara, Yozgat, Niğde and Aksaray.


The population of Kızılırmak Basin is more than 4 million. This number corresponds to approximately 5% of the total population of Türkiye.

MARMARA BASIN

The basin area is approximately 23 000 km2. The catchment area of the basin corresponds to approximately 3% of Türkiye’s total area. The inner parts of the Marmara basin are generally mountainous and rugged, while the coastal areas are mostly plains.


Within the basin, 9 provincial centers namely İstanbul, Kocaeli, Balıkesir, Bursa, Çanakkale, Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, Edirne and Yalova are located. The number of settlements in the basin is 146; 123 settlements have municipal organization and 23 settlements have no municipal organization. The major settlements as cities and some districts which are located in the basin are depicted below:


The population of Marmara basin is about 20 million. This number corresponds to approximately 24% of the total population of Türkiye. İstanbul province constitutes a very large part of the basin in terms of population (about 83%) by itself.


Marmara Basin is the most developed basin of our country in terms of population and industrialization. The unplanned and uncontrolled development of industrialization has caused significant damage to natural resources, especially in İstanbul and Kocaeli. In İstanbul, all OIZs and industrial facilities are connected to the sewerage infrastructure. However, it can be stated herewith that the wastewater treatment facilities of many organized industrial zones and various industrial facilities are either not available at all or inadequate.
